Between 1992 – 2005 I was the Sussex Downs Conservation Board’s eastern area Field Officer, based at Exceat. Following this, I was both founder and Grazing Co-ordinator of the Sussex Pony Grazing & Conservation Trust until 2015. The Trust carried out conservation grazing with its 85 ‘free-living’ Exmoor ponies in the South Downs National Park, the Ashdown Forest AONB area and several other lowland heath areas in East Sussex, helping to conserve chalk grassland and heathland landscapes together with their rich flora and fauna which depend upon routine grazing…
Now retired(?), I have become involved with managing part of a large area of specie-rich ancient woodland in the High Weald.

Though brought up in a small town, I was never more than twenty minutes walk from the rolling acres of the South Downs. The Cuckmere valley, where that silken thread of a river is cradled within those soft chalk uplands, I’ve known virtually all my life. My earliest memories being of family picnics…
